Suzanne Breen wins key legal Judgement

Statement from Republican Network for Unity executive member Kevin Mc Quillan:

“The Republican Network for unity welcome today’s court ruling opposing the RUC/PSNI attempt at forcing a journalist to reveal confidential sources and in doing so suppresses the freedom of the press.

We commend Suzanne Breen, the Sunday Tribune and National Union of Journalists for this important victory against censorship. It is ironic that the same discredited tactics once used in the British broadcasting ban and section 31 are again being tried under a new guise by the RUC in a new uniform.

This case should be an example to other newspapers and journalists who engage in the self-censorship of statements and groups critical of the British Stormont administration.

However it is regrettable that it appears that some at Stormont who were themselves victimized by censorship and demanded free speech and open debate - are now themselves quite anxious to see censorship against others who disagree with them and their roles administering British rule.”
