North Belfast Civil Rights Housing March - 18th October 2009

North Belfast Civil Rights Association

CALL TO SUPPORT MARCH FOR HOUSES

North Belfast Civil Rights Association invite community groups, Trades Unions and concerned citizens to this years March For Houses from Manor Street to Belfast City Hall. The march will take place on Sunday 18 October at 1pm.

NBCRA Chairperson Peter McIlroy said, “Housing is still a major issue in this society and is exacerbated in North Belfast because of the sectarian divisions which have drained resources and held back development for years.”

“We are inviting all community groups, Trades Unions and political parties to join us in our campaign for a coherent housing strategy based on need and equality, rather than creed and narrow political ideology.”

NBCRA is committed to highlighting the chronic issue of housing need in North Belfast such as:

The amount of blocked up houses in the area.

The failure to redevelop the Long Streets of the New Lodge

Bankrupt builders and unfinished projects

Continuing discrimination in the allocation of housing.

“The continuing ‘do nothing’ approach by the Government and Statutory Agencies is leading to increased housing poverty across the city and in North Belfast in particular.” Said Peter.

The NBCRA has written to Housing Minister, Margaret Richie to request a meeting to highlight the issues and possible practical solutions to some of the problems in the area.

The North Belfast Civil Rights Association is a non-party political, anti sectarian and non-violent association, we draw and welcome support from across the political spectrum and community.
