WHY WE OPPOSE THE PSNI

Anybody willing to open their eyes will recognise that working class communities in the north including those with long histories and legacies of resistance to British / loyalist repression are being reduced to a shadow of their former selves by criminal and anti-social elements.

Random assaults, drug epidemics and anti-social crimes such as creeper burglaries and death driving have made once proud communities a place of real fear for many (including republicans) who grew up in streets once bound together by strong ties of solidarity and neighbourly responsibility.

RESIGN NOW FROM DPP's AND HELP END POLITICAL POLICING!

Republican Network for Unity call upon nationalists and republicans to resign immediately from the D.P.P's. No-one who remains on these bodies can be considered as acting on behalf of the republican community. Recent events such as the political policing of marches in areas such as Ardoyne , Carrick Hill and other areas within the six counties provide clear evidence that 11 years after Patten and the Good Friday Agreement nothing has changed. The behaviour of the RUC/ PSNI in Coleraine allowing the murder of Kevin McDaid and the unhindered attacks by loyalist mobs in the North Antrim area are reminiscent of the murder of Robert Hamill 12 years ago.

Today the R.N.U., the 32 CSM and other republicans picketed a DPP meeting in Derry. Tony Taylor of R.N.U. read a prepared speech;

DPP meeting - DERRY Aug 2009

Anybody willing to open their eyes will recognize that working class communities in Derry have not benefited one iota following the acceptance of the RUC/PSNI by some nationalist politicians. Indeed, this meeting is but another British led QUANGO which offers nothing progressive to the Irish people.

There is no evidence that republican engagement with the RUC/PSNI in this arena or in any other British policing structure has or will in the future provide a significant solution to our community’s difficulties.

There is ample evidence however to suggest that current involvement in British Policing is damaging our districts further. Many of the worst anti-social elements are in the direct pay of the RUC/PSNI who in return for low level intelligence on republicans and others are given a license to wreck, torture, rob and ruin our community.

Ardoyne 13th July 2009

These elements, it is important to add, are paid handsomely and in excess of any industrial wage.

Furthermore, it is well documented that the RUC/PSNI is crudely targeting vulnerable young people and indeed, in certain cases, people with learning difficulties, in our town, for use as informants. These actions are shameful and those of you who sit on this alleged civic body should hang your heads in shame.

Just some of the other current RUC/PSNI activities include;

• Harassment of citizens of Derry based solely on their political opinion

• The targeting of children of known Republicans

• The unlawful use of the power of stop and search, under section 44

• The use of TASER’s, CS spray and a new generation of plastic bullets

• AND many more human rights abuses and unlawful activity

The Republican Network for Unity have assessed the impact of the acceptance of the RUC/PSNI on our communities and we now call on nationalist politicians who sit on British policing structures to do the same.

In particular we say to former comrades who sit on such British structures to “get a grip”, resign from British led so called “policing solutions” and re-engage with the Republican base.

Our communities need a republican alternative now more than ever. Community solidarity and networking based on core republican values are the only way to face down current upsurges in anti social crime in our communities.
